Welcome to Probably Outside!

Hi! My name is Monica Cardoza, and I’m the creator behind Probably Outside.

Probably Outside is for those looking to spend more time outside in nature via outings that are:

  • Local

  • Social

  • Dirt-cheap

If you desire to be outdoors in nearby nature with conservation-minded folk curious about the natural world, and without traveling far or spending lots of greenbacks, this newsletter is for you.

Just Who Do You Think You Are, Monica Cardoza?

I’m a journalist/editor who attended NYU, then spent the first part of my career pounding the pavement in New York City as an editor at The New York Times Syndicate. Later, raised a couple of kids, then moved to freelance writing about outdoor recreation and conservation for publications such as The Washington Post, Audubon, Wine Enthusiast, and Birds&Blooms.

As an outdoor writer, I’ve interviewed a flower farmer in her field, stood with a hawk counter on a cliff 500 feet above the Hudson River, kayaked a marsh with a riverkeeper group, and joined birders on a stroll of an eighteenth-century cranberry bog surrounded by nesting bluebirds. I wrote about woodcock walks, trail running, botanical drawing, and monarch migration. I went on mushroom forays, native plant garden tours, and organized bike rides through cities and parks, and along rivers. I mingled with ecologists at moth parties, surveyed the skies with birders at eagle festivals, and identified native plants with a naturalist on a happy-hour hike along a rail trail to a distillery where we enjoyed cocktails before heading back guided only by the light of the moon.

Throughout my mini-adventures, I’ve come to realize that few people know about these outings even though they’re available everywhere. So as any self-respecting journalist would do, I’m writing a book containing them. It’s titled The Great Local Outdoors, and it’ll be designed to get you outside, and make you an expert in your local outdoors.

I’ve seen the joy people get on local, social, dirt-cheap outings, and have made it my mission to help others find them in their nearby nature. Subscribe to Probably Outside, and become the go-to person for what to do in your great local outdoors.

See you outside!
